⾸先, ⽹络时代的“地球村”和麦⽒所提到的“地球村”不尽相同。《理解媒介》中的地球村理论建⽴在技术的基础上, 由于技术的发展, 交通⼯具的进步⼤⼤缩短了距离, 通讯技术的进步⼜使⼈跨越空间, 地球就犹如⼀个⼩村落, 村落⾥的⼈在任何时间任何地点都可以⽅便快捷地与其他⼈交往。然⽽, 进入网络时代, “地球村”依旧是建⽴在技术的基础之上, 但是这⾥的地球村却联系得更加紧密, 犹如⼀张 针脚细密的⼤⽹, 没有中⼼点, 站在每个点上都可以延伸到任何⽅向。其次, ⽹络新媒体作为媒介本身的巨⼤作⽤也不容忽视, 例如手机已成为⼈们必不可少的物品, 它不仅仅是通讯⼯具, 它还是⼈们休闲娱乐的⼯具, 甚⾄是⼯作⼯具。因此, 我们要正视⽹络新媒介的出现和发展, 肯定它作用的同时不能过度依赖, 要看到⽹络新媒体不断更新迭变的趋势, 适度用之。

我们要正确对待这本传播学经典名著, 积极吸收它的智慧的思想, 批判它的不足, 让它不仅为后继的研究学者指明道路, 提供宝贵的理论基础, 还能对现世的社会发展指明⽅向和提供指导。

事实上，理解麦克卢汉的媒介观，关键是对“媒介（medium）”和“信息（message）”之含义及其关系的理解。在我看来，麦克卢汉“媒介即讯息”所体现的媒介是第一位的，信息是第二位的思想，性质上和马克思“经济基础决定上层建筑”之著名论断是异曲同工的，也和近年来媒介文化研究中的“物质性转向”遥相契合：即在过分强调数字文化超越物质载体乃至时空束缚的可能性后，重新认识到“技术底座”对寄寓其上或其中的内容和活动具有根本性、基础性的决定或影响。从某种意义上看，麦克卢汉意义上的“媒介”，可以是一切具有承载和孕育功能的平台或载体，包括平台的技术架构和运行法则；而“信息”则可看作这些平台或载体所生发的“产出物”，包括从UGC到各种教育、娱乐、交流、交易活动，多种多样，不一而足。

同时，正如麦克卢汉“旧媒介成为新媒介的内容”这一“向前兼容”思想所揭示的，媒介演变展现了一种“嵌套性”景观。从电子媒介到如今的数字媒介，这种媒介的“嵌套性”也无远弗届地存在着。换言之，媒介的物质性属性并非一成不变，它可以同时既是媒介也是信息，仿佛薛定谔的猫：某个系统或平台到底是“媒介”还是“信息”，端视我们从什么角度、以何作为参照系来看待之。
